During performances of Deathtrap, The Driftwood Players are pleased to display the work of artist Joseph Mac Kechnie in our lobby.
"After spending many years as a photographer, I have developed a love for how light interacts with the subjects I am photographing. In particular, I am attracted to the high contrasts created between light and dark shapes. In the world of art this relationship is known as 'Value'. Value is my choice as a dominant design element in many of my paintings and drawings. I am also moved by the colors and abstract designs that light and shadow create."
"While I still love photography, my recent studies in fine art have made drawing and painting my tools of choice for sharing with others what I am reacting to when I am creating a piece of art. Portraits and figurative art have become my passion! When I paint a portrait from life, I look for that special moment when a subject is in contact with their inner thoughts and feelings. Or, when drawing the figure, I look for high impact lighting and shadows that define the subject in a dramatic way."
Joseph grew up in the Pacific Northwest and, as an engineering graduate of the University of Washington, has worked as a computer network design engineer in the Seattle area for many years. Following retirement last year, Joseph is now pursuing a career in fine art. He continues to develop his skills, techniques and style in all mediums such as watercolor, oil, and pastels and has received many awards for his work.
Joseph is a member of the NW and National Watercolor Societies, the Portrait Society of America, the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters and is currently serving as the President for the Eastside Association of Fine Arts. Joseph is also a member of the Cottage Lake Artist Guild.
